    Sunderland’s first-ever win at The Manor Ground, thanks to Dennis Tueart’s spectacular early goal. And he’d score a similarly spectacular effort a couple of seasons later, in The League Cup Final at Wembley, ironically v Sunderland’s arch North East rivals Newcastle.

    I was at that game and gabbiadini was brilliant. Rotherham got relegated and went onto win the division 4 title the next season losing only 8 matches 4 at home and 4 away. Hot shot bobby williamson. I work on the railway with colin douglas who's in the number 2 shirt for rotherham and he's a top lad. Up the miller's.

    A rather sad occasion, as we bade farewell to Roker Park, after it had staged nearly one-hundred years of competitive football. And rather fittingly, our opponents were Liverpool, who’d been Roker’s first-ever visitors in September 1898. While the outcome was rather aptly the same as it had been way back in 1898, a 1-0 win for us. I still miss the place loads, Roker Park RIP.

    Thanks for posting this. I was a BFC supporter in those days and recall being astonished that the penalty was awarded at the time and then seeing it on TV later. Justice seemed to have been done in the end. I also recall that there was an issue with the white coated steward seeming to try and put off Hughes - his dancing around is obvious but I can't see how the player, if properly focussed, would have even registered it. A better world of sliding tackles on muddy grounds, stewards in white coats and St Johns' first aiders on hand.....

    "How the hell I ever came from Millwall, all the way up to bloody Sunderland. I wil never know?" Considering that's a quote from one of our biggest legends and he loved his time here and loved the club. Unfortunately, that's why we will never be able to attract most big players. Our location will always be our downfall.

    • @SunderlandAFCTV
      @SunderlandAFCTV Месяц назад

      Yeah but it was much different in 1957. The country is much easier to navigate now. And I think our location is also part of what makes us special. We are Sunderland and our fans live and breath Sunderland AFC. Charlie knew it, Bally knew it, Luke knows it.....

      @@SunderlandAFCTV I agree. It's easy now and means so much to us, but nobody cares for us up here. Put it this way. Imagine you're a foreign footballer. Never been to the UK before and know nothing about the UK. You get two offers. One from Sunderland and one from Watford both for the same money both clubs in about the same position in the table. Objectively, where are you gana transfer too. Sunderland or London?

      @@themanftheworld8439 We should be able too, but are we? Most people don't even know where Sunderland is on a map. As much as we love the North East. The NE has a shit reputation. We are forgotten about up here. The mags were too. Well, before they became the richest club in the world. Look how much they have had to spend to attract the big players in the 90s. Newcastle is a much more attractive city for people too

      It’s a debate for a long night over a few pints. Sunderland are an amazing club with a rich history and the best fans in the country. But not everyone gets that, particularly established overseas players. It has been and will continue to be an ongoing challenge for the club. That’s why having local talent like Patterson, Neil and Rigg in the team is important….
